Everything about the game just has a grand, epic feel to it. The vines of killer plants reach for you in front of the Palace of Versailles. Castlevania: Bloodlines is a traditional Castlevania action platformer for the Sega Genesis, bringing the saga of the Vampire Killer whip into the 20th century. You leap up foreboding platforms that circle about the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Water rises as you traverse ancient Greek ruins. Instead of taking place only at Dracula's castle, you get to go to a bunch of other places in Europe, and the game goes all-out in presenting fantastic set pieces. With the whip you can swing across certain areas, and with the spear you can pole-vault yourself upward.

That means a randomly generated password has around 1/1000 of a chance of being valid. They play similarly, but there's enough different to warrant two playthroughs. There are 4320 valid password scenarios and 4826060 valid passwords. In Castlevania's Genesis outing, you can play as two characters: one who uses a whip, and another who uses a polearm. Now this is an awesome Castlevania game - I don't get why it generally doesn't seem to be considered one of the top classics, or why it never gets re-released like all the others of that era have. Muuten peli on todella kelvollinen lisäys Castlevanioiden katraaseen. Ärsyttävästi pelissä on rajalliset continuet ja melko kiperiä kohtia, mikä johtaa turhaan password-puljaamiseen ja/tai vanhojen kenttien uudelleensahaamiseen. Tästä pelistä alkoi myös mestarisäveltäjä Michiru Yamanen työ Castlevanioiden parissa. Samaten miljöissä on lähdetty linnaa kauemmas kurmottamaan, kun hahmot kiertävät ympäri eurooppaa mätkimässä hirviöitä. Pelissä ei pelatakaan Belmont-klaanin jäsenellä vaan valittavana on kaksi hahmoa omine liikerepertuaareineen.
Peli tuntuu, näyttää ja kuulostaa Castlevanialta juuri oikeilla tavoin, vaikka se on monella tapaa eroaakin sarjan perinteistä. Castlevania: Bloodlines (tai the New Generation meille verta pelkääville eurooppalaisille) julkaistiin Mega Drivelle ja edustaa viimeistä perinteistä Vaniaa, ennen kuin metroidvaniat ja 3D-kokeilut heittivät sarjan kertaheitolla uusille teille. Castlevania oli pitkään ennen kaikkea Nintendo-pelaajien sarja, mutta vuonna 1994 Sega sai vihdoin palansa kakkua.
